Experience Highlights
- Duration: 3 days/2 nights
- Type: Group Experience
Day 1 - After heading south from Salta until El Carril, you climb steadily up the Cuesta del Obispo – an amazing feat of road engineering - to the route’s highest point (3348 metres above sea level), known as the Piedra Del Molino.
From here the road straightens out as you go through the Los Cardones National Park, which is particularly famous for its giant cacti (cardones) which dot the hillside, ranging in colour from dark green to deep red. The total drive to Cachi is 157 km and it will take around 4-5 hours with plenty of photo stops. On arrival in Cachi, rest of day at leisure and overnight.
Day 2 - Depart Cachi on to the hamlet of Molinos and then down the legendary Ruta 40 though the Calchaquies Valley. First off you will reach the Valley of the Arrows – where the horizontal rock strata has been thrusted up vertically to look like arrow heads. As the sun sets, the mountains change colour, making for some of the most beautiful scenery of your holiday. After a scenic and exhilarating day you arrive to the sleepy town of Cafayate.
Day 3 - After a tour of this charming wine town head back to Salta up the Route 68 through the Valley of the Shells. The valley is strewn with vast, bright red rocks and there are many photo stops to admire the incredible rock formations and viewpoints in the valley.
