Kristen's review
Mexico is one of Latin America’s most vibrant and diverse destinations – and for good reason. With a rich blend of history, culture and natural beauty, this country offers something for everyone, whether you’re drawn to ancient archaeological sites, colourful colonial towns or natural wonders.
While its coastline boasts some stunning beaches – think Riviera Maya’s turquoise waters or the rugged beauty of Baja California – many of Mexico’s highlights lie inland. One of the lesser known and best things I’ve done in Mexico is the Copper Canyon; deeper and larger than the Grand Canyon, it offers dramatic landscapes, hiking and the famous El Chepe train which winds through the canyon and was an amazing experience.
Mexico City, at the heart of the country, is a destination all its own, blending ancient history with modern culture. You can wander through the Zocalo Plaza, visit the world-renowned National Museum of Anthropology or experience the city’s diverse culinary scene—from some of the best street-side taco stands to Michelin-star restaurants. Just outside the city lies Teotihuacan, the ancient ruins of the “City of the Gods,” where you can see the iconic Pyramids of the Sun and Moon and imagine life in one of Mesoamerica’s greatest civilizations. Not to be missed are the ruins of Palenque, surrounded by dense jungle and steeped in Mayan history.
On the Yucatan Peninsula, Merida offers colonial charm, a thriving arts scene and proximity to cenotes and ancient Mayan ruins like Chichen Itza. What truly sets Mexico apart is its warmth – not just the sunshine but the hospitality of its people, their passion for tradition and the vibrancy of festivals like Dia de los Muertos. Whether you’re indulging in street tacos, marvelling at ancient pyramids or immersing yourself in nature, Mexico delivers on every level!
Kristen's Top Tips
- Don’t miss the cenotes! These underground natural sinkholes were the Mayans’ main source of fresh water, something they considered their connection to the underworld.
- Take the famous Chihuahua al Pacifico train journey through the Copper Canyon, weaving between canyons and gorges and across breathtaking ravines.
- Get up close to Aztec ruins in Teotihuacan and visit one of the greatest Zapotec cities in Monte Alban: a pre-Columbian archaeological site and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What family-friendly holiday options are available in Mexico?
There are plenty of Mexico family holidays which keep everyone entertained.
Some Mexico experiences of note include the Day of the Dead festival, the Copper Canyon train tour and whale watching in Baja California; each allow you to create some unforgettable family memories. The Latin American country is also home to plenty of beaches where you can enjoy watersports, in addition to snorkelling adventures in the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef to observe various sea creatures.
What are the best destination combinations for Mexico twin centre holidays?
Sharing a border with Mexico is Guatemala, where you continue your exploration into the Mayan world.
However, Mexico is an all-rounder when it comes to holidays, offering elements of culture, nature and beach. Both the Caribbean and Pacific Coast sides of this vast country work well for beach holidays.
In the east, Playa del Carmen offers some of the most pristine white sandy beaches for a Caribbean escape. Whereas in the west, Puerto Vallarta is home to charming beaches embraced by the Sierra Madre mountains, making it the perfect place for enjoying your Mexico Pacific Coast holidays.
Additionally, domestic flights allow you to combine the country's highlights seamlessly.
What are Mexico's highlights that should not be missed on your trip?
Wildlife experiences
Between January and March every year, you can head towards Baja California and the Sea of Cortes, where you'll enjoy perhaps some of the best whale watching experiences in all of the Americas.
Biosphere reserves such as Celestun and Sian Ka'an provide plenty of chances to see wildlife, too. Celestun is home to a huge variety of wildlife and birds, including a large flamingo colony. Whereas for Sian Ka'an, you're able to snorkel along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef to see marine turtle species.
Roaming the lush jungles and mangroves of the Yucatan Peninsula are five species of big cat, including jaguars, pumas, jaguarundis, margays and ocelots. The Maya once called the majestic jaguar "Balam", with it being one of the most sacred animals in Mayan culture, often depicted in archaeological sites.
UNESCO World Heritage Sites & cultural attractions
Holidays to Mexico wouldn't be complete without visiting the Yucatan’s major Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and Uxmal, which offer fascinating insights into this ancient Mesoamerican civilisation. You can stay close to the archaeological sites or visit from Merida, or on day trips from the Riviera Maya.
Central Mexico is home to silver mining cities such as arty San Miguel de Allende and hilly Guanajuato, both of which have superbly maintained colonial centres. Further north is the Copper Canyon – a series of awesomely deep and wild canyons that are best experienced on the famous Copper Canyon Railway.
Mexico City & beyond
Most visitors to Mexico arrive in the capital city, Mexico City. There's so much to do and see while you're here. The outstanding Anthropology Museum is ideal preparation for Mexico's archaeological sites and the pre-Aztec city of San Juan Teotihuacan is an easy day trip you can do from the city.
South east of Mexico City, the charming town of Oaxaca is a popular stop with its fine colonial buildings, colourful markets and Zapotec ruins of Monte Alban. Or why not visit the verdant state of Chiapas, home to cool mountain highlands, lush jungle, coffee plantations and traditional Mayan communities?
The mysterious ruins of Palenque and colonial city of San Cristobal de las Casas are also highlights. Simply speak with our Mexico holiday specialists over the phone to start putting together your itinerary.
