Mexico's highlights
Central Mexico is the home to the silver mining cities such as arty San Miguel de Allende and hilly Guanajuato, both of which have superbly maintained colonial centres. Further north is the Copper Canyon – a series of awesomely deep and wild canyons that are best experienced on the famous Copper Canyon Railway. Or make for Baja California and the Sea of Cortes, where between January and March, whale watching is probably the best in all the Americas.
South east of Mexico City, the charming town of Oaxaca is a popular stop over with its fine colonial buildings, colourful markets and Zapotec ruins of Monte Alban nearby. Further south and bordering Guatemala is the verdant state of Chiapas. Home to cool mountain highlands, lush jungle, coffee plantations and traditional Mayan communities; the mysterious Mayan ruins of Palenque and the colonial city of San Cristobal de las Casas are a highlight in any Mexico holiday.
Holidays to Mexico wouldn't be complete without visiting the Yucatan’s major Mayan sites of Chichen Itza and Uxmal, which offer fascinating insights into this ancient Mesoamerican civilisation. You can stay close to the sites, or visit them from the nearby city of Merida, or on day trips from the Riviera Maya. Running from Cancun in the north to the picturesque site of Tulum in the south, this coast is lined with a succession of stunning white-sand beaches. A huge range of accommodation options are offered here to suit all budgets and tastes from exclusive resorts to rustic beachside lodges.
