Camp Kalahari is the sister camp to San and Jack’s Camp, and like them it’s a return to the style of a traditional safari explorer camps but still has all the creature comforts. This delightful and more affordable option in the Makgadikgadi-Nxai Pans area, is located on Brown Hyaena Island right on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, adjacent to the national park.
Cosseted amongst the acacias and Mokolwane palms, the main camp area is a traditionally built structure that uses age-old thatch techniques that help the flow of cooling breezes, and which houses the lounge and dining areas. There’s also a swimming pool here which is a great place for lazy afternoons between game drives. There are six twin tents, three double tents and one family tent which is made up from two adjacent tents with an inter-leading bathroom. The comfortable, spacious, walk in, Meru tents have proper beds with crisp linen, cosy stripy African blankets and even hot water bottles in winter. En suite outdoor facilities have flush loos, hot and cold running water and shower.
The Makgadikgadi has two distinctive seasons but year-round you are able to get up close to a very friendly group of habituated meerkats, immerse yourself in the almost forgotten ancient culture of the Zu/’hoasi Bushmen trackers as they guide you on walks and 4 wheel-drive safaris in search of unique desert wildlife. You also have the opportunity to visit one of the three largest, and oldest, of Chapman’s Baobab trees.
During Southern Africa’s winter and the dry season, which runs approximately 16 Apr to the 31 Oct, you’ll be able to take quad bikes onto the lunar expanse of the Makgadikgadi Pans. During the summer months, 1 Nov - 15 Apr, the area becomes the scene of Africa’s second largest zebra and wildebeest migration in all of Africa, second only to East Africa’s Great Migration.
Children of all ages are welcome in this camp. There is no electricity but you are able to charge your cameras / batteries etc. Your stay here is inclusive of all scheduled lodge activities, local drinks and meals, which have a strong emphasises on fresh local ingredients used in wholesome original menus.
