Duba Plains

Duba Plains in the remote northeast of the Okavango Delta, is most famed for its daily confrontation between the lion and buffalo; the island is home to a thousand-strong herd of buffalo and three prides of lion.

This raw and deadly battle is not a one sided-sided affair as the buffalo fight back with grit and determination, attempting to gouge the lions with their sharp horns; they are not easy prey. The drama of this interaction is riveting, providing fantastic photographic opportunities for the strong-of-stomach. The camp is built on one of the delta's permanent islands, and for most of the year, deep waterways isolate Duba's vast grasslands from the mainland.

Shaded by large ebony, fig and garcinia trees, the camp has six generous and very comfortable tented double rooms, on raised decks, overlooking the floodplains. The dining area, bar and lounge are shaded by mature riverine trees and also elevated on decking.

There is a small pool and each bedroom has private facilities as well as an outdoor shower, a ceiling fan and verandah complete with table and chairs.

Wildlife

The savannah is also home to plains game such as lechwe, tsessebe and sable. Hippo concentrate in the deeper permanent channels and leopard can be found on the forested parts of the island. There are large numbers of elephant and most of the Okavango's bird species are found in the area, including Wattled crane and Slaty egret.

Community

Duba is in a private concession managed by the Okavango Community Trust in a joint venture with Wilderness Safaris. The trust represents the people who live in the remote villages north of the Okavango Delta. The trust leases the concession to Duba Plains and receive the benefits directly: money, employment, training and secondary enterprises. The survival and well-being of the wildlife depends on the needs and attitudes of the villagers, who derive substantial direct and indirect benefits from Duba Plains.

Children
