Jacana Camp

The approach to Jacana Camp will take your breath away.

On the eastern side of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, this simple yet comfortable safari camp is set on a pretty island in an area of permanent water on the Jao flats. It accommodates a maximum of eight guests, in five Meru-style tents, and is perfect for those who like an intimate atmosphere. Groups of six or more can book the entire camp without incurring a surcharge.

The tents at Jacana Camp are on raised wooden decks, each with a view of the surrounding floodplains, and an enclosed but roofless bathroom, flush toilet and shower. The camp offers first-rate dining on its wooden deck, surrounded by lush vegetation and scenic views of the Okavango Delta. There is a comfortable bar for relaxation under the stars and a lounge located around an open fire.

Activities

Jacana is a true water camp. During the flood season (May to October), the camp becomes surrounded by water. Expert guides lead mokoro, motorboat and walking safaris, and, when the flood waters recede, day and night game-drives in open 4WDs are on offer (usually from October to April, depending on water levels).

Wildlife

This location provides excellent wetland game viewing, with concentrations of red lechwe, sitatunga, hippos and crocodiles. In the dry season, there are elephant, tsessebe, wildebeest, and zebra, while cheetah, leopard, and lion may be seen on the floodplains. Birding is also strong here, especially for wetland bird species. Greater and Lesser jacanas, Slaty egrets, and Wattled cranes are among the birds regularly seen here.

Children
