Duma Tau

Duma Tau is located near the source of Botswana’s Savute Channel, which is well-known for abundant plains game and their predators.

The Channel ran dry some time ago, leaving behind good soil and excellent grazing, the perfect ingredients for breathtaking sights on your safari holiday. Nothing is as thrilling as a wild dog chase across the open plains of the Savute.

Recent visitors to Duma Tau followed a chase, and witnessed a 23-dog kill. Aware of circling hyenas angling after a free lunch, the hungry animals demolished the unfortunate impala within minutes.

The camp is built under a shady grove of mangosteen trees and overlooks a hippo-filled lagoon; you fall asleep at night listening to the gentle grunts of the hippos. Raised walkways join up the rooms and the communal areas, dipping down to ground level to allow for an elephant pathway that crosses right through the camp.

Accommodation is in ten luxurious, tented rooms that have traditional thatched roofs and are raised on decks, facing the lagoon. All have private facilities as well as outdoor showers. The main area of the camp includes a large dining room, bar, lounge and plunge pool. Duma Tau is know for its ‘loo-with-a-view’; private, but open on one side with a fabulous view over the flood plains, the ultimate in armchair game viewing!

Wildlife

Wildlife viewing is excellent all year round: impala, wildebeest, red lechwe, zebra, giraffe, sable, buffalo, baboon, monkey, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and hyena frequently roam through the Channel. Elephants congregate along the waterways and lagoons during the dry winter months. Birdlife is plentiful – large Secretary birds and Kori bustards are frequently seen in the Savute marshland, as are stork, carmine bee eaters and Quelen finches that gather in their thousands around April.

Activities

There are day and night drives in open 4WD, short walks along the Linyanti River and Savuti Channel, and the camp boat can take you on a hair-raising ride through the hippo infested channels. There are also a number of hides where you can get extra close to the animals, providing great opportunities for keen photographers.

Children
