Experience Highlights
- Duration: 4 hours
Departing from the hotel early in the morning, visitors are transferred to the Otway Sound area, 40 miles north of the city of Punta Arenas. The Penguin Sanctuary of Otway Sound lies here, where from October to March Magellanic penguins make their way to nest and raise their young. At the end of March, adults leave the colony heading to the sea and return in October for the start of the mating season.
The visit requires a walk on well-marked trails to reach the beach observation platform from where this remarkable natural spectacle of the penguin colony can be watched. On the way, other bird varieties may be encountered, such as caiquenes (upland geese), ñandúes (lesser rheas), bandurrias (black-faced ibis) and other species of fauna, including foxes and hares.
Note:operates October to March
