Karanambu Lodge, once a 110-square mile cattle ranch is located in North Rupununi beside the meandering Rupunini River.
Simple Amerindian style accommodation consists of claybrick thatched huts with verandah, twin beds, and an attached washroom featuring a cool shower and flushing toilet. Electricity is produced by solar power and available during specific time slots.
Landscapes around the lodge display the contrasting habitats of four ecosystems: wetlands, savannah, river and forests offering an incredible range of biodiversity. Excursions are offered from the lodge by boat on the river, on the vast savannah plains by Land Rover or by foot along the different trails.
Birds around the lodge are plentiful with up to 600 species on record. Larger creatures include giant river otters, giant anteaters, capybara, black caiman and jabiru stork.
Whilst at the lodge there is opportunity to learn about the late Diana McTurk and her tireless efforts in rehabilitating orphaned giant river otters.
