Set on a hillside above Ewaso Narok River, Laikipia Wilderness Main Camp offers you an adventurous and relaxed Laikipia safari holiday in Kenya.
Having left Zimbabwe in the early 2000s, Steve Carey (a Zimbabwean pro-guide) and his wife moved to Kenya to manage Sosian Lodge. From there, he went on to build Laikipia Wilderness on the adjacent Ol Doinyo Lemboro Ranch. Steve, and his guiding team (a mix of Zimbabwean and Kenyan guides), place emphasis on close-up wildlife encounters, while exploring this wonderful area. Over the past couple of years, a resident black leopard and wild dog pack have been drawing attention to Laikipia Wilderness.
Accommodation & Facilities
- In the Main Camp, you can choose from four Family Tents and two Double Tents.
- The Family Tent is designed to comfortably accommodate families with smaller children. There’s an extra-large option which allows up to four kids at any one time.
- The Double Tent is perfect if you’re travelling solo or as a couple. Head out on the spacious veranda and enjoy a moment of relaxation before the thrill of a safari.
- Sit on the swinging bench above camp for a 360° view of the Laikipia landscape.
Craig’s Experience & Review
Our East Africa Travel Specialist, Craig Kaufman, visited Laikipia Wilderness Main Camp in late 2024.
“Laikipia Wilderness Main Camp is a good choice if quality guiding is a priority for you. Steve and his guiding team know their stuff.“Steve lives in the camp and is still involved in the operation. He leads some of the armed (rifle) guided walks, busies himself using the tracking equipment in search of wild dog and updates himself on the movements of the celebrated black leopard.“Laikipia Wilderness may be considered by some as a “lower standard” camp, but my bed was very comfortable, providing a cosy nights’ sleep – and the showers are hot at any time, too.“I was thoroughly impressed by the very talented, experienced, and enthusiastic guiding team – who work very closely with one another. The landscapes – rock kopjes, riverine and viewpoints – are attractive while the food is delicious. They cook tasty, hearty foods – tender meat and like to mix it up, i.e. bush breakfasts (choice of cooked eggs), bush dinners over the campfire, etc.”
