The style at Basecamp Explorer is simple with furniture made on site from local materials. There is a choice of double or twin rooms, with beds made up with crisp linen. In addition there is a family tent that accommodates up to four people. Tents are all equipped with solar-powered lighting, private toilet and outdoor shower.

Activities

Morning and afternoon game drives take place in open Landcruisers in the Masai Mara. There are guided camp tours to learn about sustainable practices including a visit to the Masai Arts & Crafts training project and Talek village visits.

Birding walks are popular, with over 300 species in the immediate area, as well as guided walking safaris to the Basecamp Explorer Bush Camp. Maasai story-telling is a particular favourite at this camp.

Food

Meals are of high quality and served in the cool, open, thatched dining area or, weather permitting, in the open. There is fresh-baked bread and African and international dishes. On half-day game drives, you have a hearty bush breakfast.

Facilities

A tree-house viewing tower provides spectacular views of the African sunset and the annual Great Migration.

Community

The Masai Arts & Crafts project aims to preserve the Maasai people's rich beadwork tradition and to provide the Talek women with an income from producing high-quality, handicrafts.

Over a hundred local women work at the crafts centre, producing hand-made items in traditional designs. The thread used in beadwork is made from used plastic bags. Products are sold at the camp and at selected outlets, and 75% of the price is received by the woman who made the item.
