Located in a crescent-shaped bay with comfortable en-suite chalets, Anakao Ocean Lodge is an ideal base at which to end a Madagascar tour in the country's remote and arid south-west.
The lodge operates daily speedboat transfers from Tulear harbour (duration: approx 1 hour; latest transfer time 10h00 depending on sea conditions).
The standard bungalows can accommodate two adults and 1 child, or 3 adults. Family bungalows are able to accommodate 2 adults and 2 children. The Anakao Suite accommodates 2 adults and 2 children. All have en-suite bathrooms with shower and rooms are equipped with mini-bar, hair-dryer and safe. Visa cards are accepted.
There is a restaurant, library and spa in the main building. Management (Italian) receives generally good, but mixed reviews. (2015). Swimming is enjoyable and safe off the beach in front of the lodge. Speak to reception about organising snorkelling trips to Nosy Ve (known also for its colony of Tropic-birds) and Nosy Satrana.
The lodge arranges excursions to remarkable Tsinamampetsotsa National Park in a Unimog truck, 'The Beast', which really, is the best way to negotiate the rough roads - it takes about 90 minutes to reach the park from Anakao and makes for an unforgettable day excursion.
