Benguerra Lodge ,strung along one of the beautiful beaches of Benguerra Island, blends into the acacia and mahogany forest bordering Benguerra Bay.

It is a lovely, remote setting for a honeymoon or romantic holiday in Mozambique, where you can relax and savour the beauty of the natural environment. With the outstanding diving and the fishing of the Bazaruto Archipelago, it also provides a comfortable base for an active holiday.

Accommodation

After the 2007 cyclone, its chalets were rebuilt to a higher standard, while retaining its ‘barefoot luxury character. There are now 12 secluded chalets raised on stilts, with wooden floors, woven reed walls and thatched roofs. Twenty metres from the beach, each has its own deck and plunge pool. Ten are casitas – spacious suites with comfortable lounge areas. Two are cabanas, which are smaller luxury rooms. Just 10 metres from the beach, a luxury two-bedroom villa has a comfortable lounge and dining room. Ideal for families, The Villa comes with a private chef.

Facilities

The central main lodge building houses the lounge, bar, dining area, library and gift shop. The large deck area is the ideal spot for a sundowner. There is a pool on the beach.

Food

Meals are relaxed and served in different settings, though always with attentive personal service. Crayfish, crab and calamari and Portuguese flavours often feature on the menu.

Activities

The lodge offers dhow trips, birding excursions and snorkelling. A private picnic on a deserted beach is a speciality. You can visit one of the local villages, go on an island walk or discover the freshwater lakes. The diving and fishing are magnificent, but so is the dazzling crescent-shaped beach. Children are welcome at Benguerra Lodge, but there are no dedicated children’s facilities.

Diving & Snorkelling

The reefs around the island are beautiful and unspoiled, with abundant and diverse marine life. You could encounter schools of  banner fish, moorish idols, butterfly fish, blue striped snappers, barred sweetlips, and goldies, among others. The lodge maintains a fully-equipped dive centre and offers guided snorkelling excursions. Two Mile Reef provides a number of superb snorkelling sites on the inside of the reef, and great dive sites on the outside.

Fishing at Benguerra

Benguerra Lodge maintains three 22-foot Acecats for the legendary game fishing of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Each is crewed by an experienced skipper and ghillie. Boats are equipped with fighting chairs, outriggers, safety equipment, radios and 20lb. fishing rods for four fishermen.

The lodge has two experienced professional guides for saltwater fly-fishing – and Lowrence-equipped boats for fly-fishing. Kingfish, including GTs, king and queen mackerel, and springer are most commonly caught, but bonefish are around the island.

Community

The lodge is involved in a number of community projects on the island. Self-sufficiency projects include a garden project, whereby the lodge provides land, water, materials and expertise to the community so that they can grow vegetables – both for personal use and to sell to us at the Lodge, and food for work schemes – whereby the lodge gives people basic supplies (cooking oil, rice and sugar) in return for work on island infrastructure, such as roads.

A lot of work is done with the island children. Children collect rubbish on the island and can exchange bags of rubbish for educational supplies. The lodge helps to support the island school which has nearly 300 children, and guests also donate money to the school.
