Welgelegen means ‘well located’ in Dutch, and this place is. It stands in a leafy cul-de-sac on the border of Gardens, an old established area at the foot of Table Mountain, and the Kloof area of Cape Town. You are just a couple of minutes walk from the Kloof Street cafés and bistros, and a similar distance from the museums and historic buildings surrounding Company Gardens.
Welgelegen occupies two large Edwardian houses, with a delightful cobbled courtyard in between. The courtyard has a plunge pool and is a pleasant place to enjoy a hearty morning breakfast, spend the afternoon on a lounger, or sip a drink in the evening.
The accent throughout is on stylish design; the previous owner was an interior decorator. The new owner, a young Englishwoman, Fiona Evans, has added a treatment room to provide yet more pampering. She has a strong commitment to personal service, which helps to create a homely feeling at Welgelegen.
