Londolozi Varty Camp is in the heart of the Sabi Sands, adjacent to Kruger National Park.
It is an area rich in wildlife, with breeding herds of elephant and buffalo, high concentrations of lion and white rhino – and the iconic ‘Leopards of Londolozi’.
Londolozi has five small and elegant camps. All the camps have been thoroughly refurbished with the aim of providing genuine luxury, created with natural materials, to enriched – not distract from - the experience of the bush.
Accommodation
Varty Camp stands on the site where the Vartys first made camp in 1926. It offers eight chalets and two suites, raised off the ground and shaded by ancient trees. Each has its own pool in a timber deck overlooking the river bank.
Food
Superb meals are served in the camp dining room, or around the boma or at a bush banquet. They embody the quality of the Londolozi experience, and reflect its approach, favouring free-range and organic, using herbs and produce from the Londolozi kitchen garden, and minimising the use of imported ingredients.
Activities
Varty Camp offers you two game drives each day in open Landrovers and walking safaris. Bird-watching, stargazing and bush banquets complement the game-viewing and offer the chance to achieve a more intense experience of the bush.
Overnight bush sleep-outs, tracking and the full moon walk are other tailor-made opportunities. You can visit the staff village and get an inkling of why the Londolozi staff are so committed.
In addition, there is a daily yoga class at sunrise and sunset; or you can have a private yoga lesson on your deck or on one of the yoga decks.
Facilities
The wellness centre offers Swedish massage, aromatherapy and reiki healing. The well-equipped exercise room overlooks the Sand River – and the swimming pool. Londolozi has developed a witty series of workouts derived from the strength and agility of its wildlife, and the fitness instructors will be glad to help you. The cinematography centre screens films about the environment each day.
Children
Varty Camp is a place where children will feel comfortable. Up to two children can share your room and offers the complimentary Londolozi Cubs programme to children under 10. Children under 6 cannot go on game drives, but will be engaged in well-thought-out, creative activities including African dance, paper maché, candle making, sing songs, stories, painting, clay modelling, spoor ID, and bug catching. Please ask us about the inspirational and educational Future Nature programme available to children aged 6 – 16 (additional cost). Children under 3 stay free of charge. Those aged 3 – 5 are charged 25% of the adult rate. Children aged 6 – 11 may go on game drives and cost 50%. Child rates apply to children sharing a room with adults.
Community
The people are central to the Londolozi vision – and practice. Perhaps the most significant ingredient in Londolozi’s commitment to its staff and their families is the continuing education programme, individually designed for the needs, talents and aspirations of each person. Many of the families in the staff village have lived there for over 30 years and you can visit the crèche, clinic, adult learning centre and the craft centre.
Access
Federal Air operates daily flights from OR Tambo International Airport to Londolozi Airstrip. Transfers by road (2 hours) or by air (20 mins) are available from Kruger Mpumalanga Airport. You can also drive in by car. There is a Sabi Sands Reserve gate fee of R70 per vehicle.
Relais & Chateaux
Londolozi has been a member of Relais & Chateaux since 1993, has won three Relais & Châteaux trophies since 2005, and has an enviable reputation as one of Africa’s most exclusive lodges.
