We are delighted to once again be arranging trips for active wildlife enthusiasts to magnificent and rugged Marojejy National Park in the remote north-eastern Malagasy rainforests. This incredibly impressive 55,000 ha national park has long been appreciated among adventurous wildlife enthusiasts for its evocative rainforest scenery and diverse fauna.

The World Heritage Site of Atsinanana Rainforests, which Marojejy is a part of, is the rainiest corner of Madagascar with up to 5 meters of precipitation per anum being recorded, so you should aim to visit this area from late August to mid December, to get the best value out of your experience and to enjoy prolific wildlife sightings.

Given the terrain and the infrastructure in place for tourists, we must emphasise that Marojejy is suitable only for travellers with a reasonable level of fitness - see our notes in the park description. There are some arduous slopes and narrow trails, which can be slippery during or after wet weather. For those who are able to handle these conditions, Marojejy presents a wildlife experience which is regularly rated by our clients as their trip highlight.

Mammals present in the park include the critically endangered Silky sifaka or 'Forest angel'; White-fronted lemur; Northern bamboo lemur; Ringtailed vontsira (aka mongoose) and various nocturnal lemurs. Birders will be in their element, with the area's icon being the bizarre Helmet vanga, almost always spotted by our guests. There are other rainforest rarities such as Henst's goshawk; Pitta-like, Scaly and Short-legged ground-rollers; Red-breasted coua, Velvet and Yellow-bellied sunbird asity; Gray-crowned greenbul and the inexplicably scarce Bernier's vanga.  Herpetologists will be in their element, with a large variety of Chameleons, geckoes (notably various Uroplatus species), snakes and frogs in evidence.

Accommodation is comprised of three small camps at different elevations; facilities are basic (shared); there is no generator for power and all supplies are brought along from Sambava and taken up the mountain by porters. A cook accompanies the camp staff, and all our clients have been impressed with the food.  This really is 'soft adventure' at its best; these trips almost require expedition level preparation.

Itinerary

You will be collected from your hotel and transferred to Antananarivo Ivato Airport to check in for the Tsaradia flight to Sambava, the 'vanilla capital' in North-east Madagascar. On arrival into Sambava, you will be welcomed and transferred to the rustic Orchidea Beach Hotel to stay overnight with dinner and breakfast included. Your private, experienced, professional, English-speaking wildlife expert Malagasy guide and private driver will take you to see a Vanilla farm today, where you'll be showed how the pods of this valuable crop are processed.
The adventure begins after breakfast. You will be transferred in a private 4-wheel drive vehicle to Manentenina, (about 90 minutes inland) where vehicles are left in the parking area. From there, set off on foot with your guides and porters on the long walk - about 4hrs, i.e two hours to the park entrance and then another two hours uphill to Camp Mantella, which is at about 500m elevation. Stay overnight in the basic huts with all meals provided. Currently, there are 4 new bungalows completely refurbished with wood, and 2 old bungalows. The dining area has also been totally refurbished.
After breakfast at Camp Mantella, start the walk upwards through very beautiful rainforest to Camp Simpona, which like Camp Mantella, was extensively refurbished during the last two years. Along the way, you'll be able to look for endemic birds such as the Helmet vanga (pictured) with its massive blue bill. Stay overnight in one of the small huts, all meals included. Catering has always been done really well for our guests - be sure to let us know your dietary requirements and preferences well in advance, so we can arrange the appropriate supplies. In Camp Simpona/Camp 2, the dining area has been completely refurbished (2022)
After enjoying some wildlife watching around Camp Simpona, where your chances of seeing the iconic Silky sifakas are best, walk downhill to Camp Mantella for an overnight stay. * Those who wish, can summit Mt Marojejy this morning, but do note that some of the trail up to the summit are in need of repair; MNP and other organisations plan to work on this in 2022/3.
Breakfast and wildlife watching in the morning will be followed by the walk down to the park entrance and from there, back to Manentenina where your vehicle and driver await you. Drive to Sambava where you relax for the night at Orchidea Beach Hotel , all meals included. The rustic hotel is the best in town and by the seaside, where there are some pretty enough beaches, but as cross-currents are strong, we recommend rather not to swim off Sambava.
You will be transferred to Sambava Airport to check in for the 90 minute Tsaradia flight back to Antananarivo. On arrival back into Ivato Airport, you will be met and transferred to Relais des Plateaux to stay overnight with breakfast included.
You will be collected from your hotel and transferred to the airport for your onward flight, or by road if you are scheduled to drive out of the capital today.
