Kapani Lodge

Kapani Lodge, originally built as renowned conservationist Norman Carr’s own home, has been transformed into an exclusive, permanent 10-room lodge.

Kapani stands on an ox-bow lagoon just outside the South Luangwa National Park and the game drives and walks from Kapani are as good as it gets.

Accommodation

Kapani has eight standard suites on either side of the main lounge area. Each suite is well furnished and has its own lounge, bar/fridge and a fan inside the mosquito net. The two lagoon houses are even more spacious and favoured by honeymooners and those in search of greater seclusion. Kapani is on mains electricity. 

Facilities

The main lounge area, housing the lounge and library, is a thatched structure in the centre of Kapani’s well tended lawns. It is a place to withdraw from the heat in hot weather and to enjoy the warmth of an open fire in the cooler months.

A few steps below is the enormous main deck, with the bar, a comfortable space in which to sit, the dining area – and open views over the lagoon to the floodplain. The swimming pool is a real pleasure and the curio shop has a good range of crafts, including textiles.

Food

Depending on the season, al fresco dinners may be served on the terrace, on the deck or by the pool. The standard is high and usually exceeds guests’ expectations. If you are after an intimate occasion, Kapani can arrange private dinners.

Activities

The game-rich Mfuwe area of the South Luangwa provides a rewarding safari experience throughout the year. You cross the bridge over the Luangwa River for game drives in the park where the wildlife is abundant – but you are likely to encounter a few other safari vehicles. Night drives are worthwhile and walking safaris can be arranged.

Or you might decide to stay behind, under one of the large shade trees, and watch the wildlife wandering through camp. In the dry season, we recommend a couple of days at Kapani combined with four or five days walking safari in the more remote bush camps: Luwi, Nsolo, Kakuli and Mchenja camps.

In the green season, you would probably want to extend your stay at Kapani – the game-viewing and birding are amazing! – and go on to Kakuli Bush Camp.

Children are welcome at Kapani.

Kapani Lodge is about 45 minutes from Mfuwe airport
