Experience Highlights
- Duration: Half day
You will begin your tour at the city’s Main Square, with the most iconic buildings in Arequipa. First stop will be the Iglesia de La Compañía de Jesús, a Jesuit church, the oldest and most important example of religious architecture that used sillar as its essential construction material. From there, you move on the traditional districts of Carmen Alto and Yanahuara, the latter boasting its famous lookout point with a spectacular view of three volcanoes: Mount Misti, Mount Chachani, and Mount Pichu-Pichu, as well as the city itself.
Last stop is the Santa Catalina Monastery, founded in 1580 when Francisco de Toledo was Viceroy of Peru. It’s a large complex, 20,426 m2, and has cloisters, charming streets, and small plazas that have never changed over its more than 500-year history. During the tour, you will learn something of what life is like for the select group of nuns living there.
