My first experience of Latin America was on a study abroad programme while at university. I visited Costa Rica and Nicaragua to learn about International Development, attending a Spanish language school and then working at a turtle conservation site on the Caribbean coast.
Some years later, I took a three-month break from work and went back to Central America to revisit these countries in a little more depth, also heading to Guatemala, Belize and Panama. After this backpacking trip, I began working in the travel industry, first for an independent travel agent and then later for adventure tour companies, and subsequent travels took me back to Latin America whenever I could.
I’ve been so fortunate having explored other very different parts of the world since, but it’s this area I’m always drawn to and want to return to. Most recently, I visited Colombia, which encapsulates everything that I love about this incredible continent – verdant, rugged landscapes, its biodiversity, countless colourful birds, amphibians, butterflies, bugs and spiders, wild coastlines and warm, hospitable people.
It's almost impossible to pinpoint favourite places or highlights. However, exploring the huge Mayan ruins of Tikal at sunrise surrounded by coatis, seeing the alien-like lifeforms on various night-time rainforest walks and watching river dolphins in the Amazon are the most memorable.
