A short, relaxed trip allowing time to experience the unique Chaparri reserve, 75km from Chiclayo. An ornithologists dream, visit the key spots in the reserve with your specialist guide with more than 237 species of birds and the rare spectacled bear living in its natural habitat. Spend 2 nights at the Chaparri Eco Lodge.
Day 1 – En-route from Chiclayo visit Tinajores reservoir, a man made construction from the 1970’s and now a wildlife reserve. Highlights can include Great Grebe, Black-faced Ibis, Chilean Flamingo, waders and other waterbirds. Arrive to Chaparri Lodge for lunch and settle in. Afternoon walk along the ‘Huachuma’ trail searching for Tumbesian endemics, other birds and mammals.
Day 2 – A full day, starting at dawn visiting the Pavas valley. Walk through a 4km trail of varying terrain with great opportunities for spotting arid open area species Sulphur-throated Finch and Andean Tinamou as well as birds of the wooded valleys such as Ochre-bellied Dove and seasonally Black-and-White Tanager. Either return on the same path or venture to lower altitude areas in the Chaparri Valley for Tumbes Tyrant , Cinereous Finch and other endemics.
Day 3 – Sunrise birdwatching near the lodge watching the hummingbirds bathing in the stream. After breakfast, visit the lower areas for chances of spotting Rufous Flycatcher, Peruvian Thick-knee, Sulphur-throated Finch en route. Depart after lunch for your flight from Chiclayo or travel further east towards Kuelap, Gocta Falls and the northern Peruvian Amazon.
