Experience Highlights

  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Type: Group Experience

The small town of Chinchero is one of the Sacred Valley's most picturesque. Known as the birthplace of the rainbow, this traditional Andean village combines Inca ruins, a beautiful colonial church, spectacular mountain views and a very vibrant and colourful Sunday market. Chichero's local church was built in 1607 and sits upon the remains of an Inca palace, its interior is made up of ornate painted ceilings and combines both Catholic and traditional motifs; definitely worth a stop. Although the market is a lot smaller than Pisac, it offers many beautiful handicrafts. Many locals from all the different nearby villages come to Chichero to buy and sell their produce, just watching the haggling locals and doing a bit of bartering yourself is definitely a highlight. Famous of its local expert weavers, it is said to be the weaving centre of Peru. Many local women, in traditional costume, can be observed and will happily show visitors how they produce different colours for the wool they spin and weave. Visit the famous textile centre of Urpi, an excellent place to pick up fine alpaca and llama wool handicrafts. The local ruins are a great display of Inca stonework as they spill down the hillside from the church.
