Peru’s Pacific coast capital Lima, also known as the City of King’s, was once the capital of Spain’s colonial empire, something that is still reflected in its faded glory. It may not be love at first sight with Lima but for those willing to explore will be more than pleasantly surprised with its mix of art and architecture, world-class gastronomy and Pacific coast views. What was once just a gateway to the rest of the country, we think Lima merits a stop in any Peru itinerary.
The city’s food scene has really put Lima in the spotlight in recent years, currently enjoying a gastronomic revolution, it is one of the best places to sample Peruvian cuisine. Whatever your budget, choose from 3 of the world’s best restaurants or alternatively a relaxed dining experience in a traditional huarique. Whatever your preference, Lima is jam packed with incredible restaurant choices. We recommend opting for some ceviche whilst in town!
Most visitors to the city head to Miraflores, Lima’s most affluent district. A residential and retail area sat up on the cliffs, Miraflores’ position overlooks the waves crashing onto the shingle beaches, often full of surfers and provides a great base for exploration. Nearby, the Bohemian district of Barranco is filled with art galleries, beautifully restored mansion houses and boutique shops.
Lima’s historic, downtown centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, essential to stop by during a city tour. Here you’ll find the Presidential Palace, the Cathedral and the Archbishop’s Palace, amongst many other beautiful colonial buildings. Boasting an excellent selection of museums, we recommend the Larco Museum; showcasing one of the finest gold and silver collections from Ancient Peru in the world and Casa Aliaga; the oldest house within the Americas. The latter has seen 18th generations of the Aliaga family and was gifted to the family by Francisco Pizzaro.
Nazca Lines & the Ballestas Islands
Lima is also a good base for a short side trip down the coast to fly over the Nazca Lines and take a boat trip around the Ballestas Islands. Please enquire for more details.
