The Orange Walk District itself is a curious mix of Creole, Maya and Mennonite communities.
Responsible for much of Belize's food and sugar production, the district is home to agricultural farmland, dense swathes of jungle, ancient Mayan ruins and well-protected wildlife conservation areas. Jaguars, puma, ocelot, margay and jaguarundi are all on the prowl in the remote jungle areas here and crocodiles bask along the New River.
Discover some spectacular Mayan sites almost completely surrounded by thick jungle such as Altun Ha and the impressive ruins of Lamanai. Much has been done here to protect and preserve the pristine forest as a habitat for wildlife and in recent years, endangered species have begun to thrive in areas such as the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, the Rio Bravo Conservation Area and the private Gallon Jug Estate.
We have a selection of comfortable, remote lodges, perfect as a base on your Orange Walk holiday. This wonderful and tranquil area is an ideal place for wildlife lovers, where chances of a jaguar spotting in the wild are better here than almost anywhere else - although you still have to be very lucky!
These lodges offer fully inclusive programmes including a selection of trips to various areas nearby and also transport to the lodge usually by road and boat or also by small aircraft into a local airstrip.
