In semi- arid northern Ethiopia, this region includes some well- known sites such as Axum with its remarkable stelae (obelisk) park; Yeha with its pre-Christian 'Temple of the Moon'; the Adwa Mountains and the Gerhalta plains region, closer to the town of Mekelle, with its rock-hewn constructions and fantastic, mountain scenery
Mekelle can also serve as an access point/ airport for adventurous visitors who want to make trips into the otherworldly Danakil Depression in the Afar region, with its many active volcanoes.
While at present accommodation in Axum is rather limited, the Gerhalta Lodge near Hawzien is deservedly sought-after and worth a night or two. We can also arrange home stays in the TESFA Community Trekking sites in the Tigray region - ask us for details.
