The tiny island of Tobago is the secret jewel of the Caribbean offering its visitors an authentic tropical island experience. At the last count, the capital city of Scarborough had a population of just 17,000. Just 26 miles long and seven miles wide, Tobago is easy to navigate and travel across whether you stay for a few days or a couple of weeks.

Drive along the coast, dotted with quaint fishing villages, before entering the depths of the jungle in the heart of the island. The Main Ridge Forest Reserve was declared a protected rainforest in 1776, the oldest forest reserve in the western hemisphere and home to a range of ecosystems from mangrove swamps to wetlands, savannahs, lowland and mountain rainforests. The reserve holds a fascinating array of flora and fauna including 16 of the 90 mammals in the Caribbean region. Due to it’s amazing array of wildlife Tobago has been nicknamed ‘The Galapagos of the West Indies’, the list of animals including 210 species of bird, 17 bats, 23 non-poisonous snakes, 12 mammals and small harmless alligators called caimans.

A trip to Tobago would not be complete without visiting the east of the island and exploring the astonishing underwater world. Take the plunge into the pristine crystalline waters and swim amongst the vibrant coral reeds, manta rays, angel fish, Atlantic spotted dolphins, stingrays and leatherback turtles.

For a delightful day trip take a boat over to the tiny islets of Goat Island, the former home of Bond author Ian Fleming, and St Giles Island, the underwater cliffs and canyons perfect for intrepid divers. Little Tobago is an absolute must for bird watchers. Known as Bird of Paradise Island, this wildlife sanctuary gives you the chance to get close to an incredible variety of birds. Walk across the cliffs to get a glimpse of the seabirds, red-billed tropicbird, brown and red footed booby and magnificent frigatebird.

The island is filled with quaint, stylish and unique hotels, B&Bs and lodges, with not a high-rise impersonal tower block shadowing the golden sand beaches.
