A new stop on the northern circuit, this 74,600ha area encompasses transition forest and deciduous dry forest. There are caves and limestone formations. Note that passages in the labyrinth are very narrow in places, so are suited for slim individuals only.
With the establishment of Fanamby's Black Lemur Camp, Parc Andrafiamena Andavakoera combines well with Montagne d'Ambre and Ankarana National Parks.
Drive time (depending on season) from Diego Suarez to Black Lemur Camp is about 4 ½ hours, with some sections after leaving the RN6 being potholed and rough.
The area's flagship mammal is the all-black Perrier's black sifaka, one of the world's 25 most endangered primates. We saw two of the habituated groups of this enigmatic lemur quite easily in our October 2018 visit. Among the other resident lemur species are Crowned lemur and Northern sportive lemur. By night you should see Mouse lemurs, along with a variety of reptiles and fascinating invertebrates.
There are well mapped trails leading into the forest from Black Lemur Camp. The main trail commences with a 30 - 45 minute ascent up a fairly steep slope into which the path is cut. From there, a further 30 - 45 minutes' walk on more level terrain can get visitors to the territory of one of the resident and increasingly habituated groups of Perrier's black sifaka.
We highly recommend the village visit to Anjahankely near Black Lemur Camp and to the Fanamby nursery, where you will be invited to plant an endemic tree as part of the habitat restoration work under way here.
