This three-centre Zanzibar holiday takes you to a superb selection of beach destinations;
- Unguja, the main island in the Zanzibar Archipelago,
- Chumbe a tiny coral island just 6 km off the Stone Town coast, and finally
- Mafia, the biggest island in the Mafia Archipelago.
The holiday begins in Zanzibar’s historic capital, Stone Town, where you explore on foot with a private guide and spend one night at the Zanzibar Palace.
En route to Chumbe Island you take in a guided tour of Jozani Forest the home of the Red Colobus monkey and a Spice Farm tour which is a show case of the island’s agriculture. The award-winning eco-lodge on Chumbe Island, set in the Marine National Park, is your next base and from here you can snorkel to the reef straight from the beach.
A short flight takes you on to eco-conscious Mafia Island, which lacks any serious development, and people say is much like Zanzibar was thirty years ago.
This really is a beach holiday with a difference, as you get a good overview of all the islands as well as having plenty of time to enjoy beach pursuits. Most of the lodges have strong eco-credentials and the excursions support conservation initiatives.
