This three-centre Zanzibar holiday takes you to a superb selection of beach destinations;

  • Unguja, the main island in the Zanzibar Archipelago,
  • Chumbe a tiny coral island just 6 km off the Stone Town coast, and finally
  • Mafia, the biggest island in the Mafia Archipelago.

The holiday begins in Zanzibar’s historic capital, Stone Town, where you explore on foot with a private guide and spend one night at the Zanzibar Palace.

En route to Chumbe Island you take in a guided tour of Jozani Forest the home of the Red Colobus monkey and a Spice Farm tour which is a show case of the island’s agriculture. The award-winning eco-lodge on Chumbe Island, set in the Marine National Park, is your next base and from here you can snorkel to the reef straight from the beach.

A short flight takes you on to eco-conscious Mafia Island, which lacks any serious development, and people say is much like Zanzibar was thirty years ago.

This really is a beach holiday with a difference, as you get a good overview of all the islands as well as having plenty of time to enjoy beach pursuits. Most of the lodges have strong eco-credentials and the excursions support conservation initiatives.

Itinerary

Depart on overnight flight from London to Dar es Salaam.
Arrive in the early morning and connect with a light aircraft flight to Zanzibar. Your guide will meet you on arrival and take you to Zanzibar Palace Hotel for a quick check in before heading out on a walking tour. Overnight here with breakfast included. The hotel offers an excellent dinner and if you think you may want to eat in, it’s a good idea to pre-book. We’d recommend it.
After breakfast set off with your driver guide to the Jozani Forest to see the endangered Red Colobus monkey sanctuary and to take in a Spice Farm tour. This afternoon you’ll be dropped at Matemwe Beach Village where you stay in a standard room for 3 nights. Breakfast and dinner are included. The lodge has a lovely pool area and the 5-star PADI dive centre is available for use on the near-by Mnemba Atoll, and this caters for all levels of experience.
Take a return road transfer to Stone Town where you catch the boat for the short trip across to Chumbe Island for a 3-night stay in an innovatively designed eco-bungalow. All meals, soft drinks, water and snacks included. A boat trip with guide and equipment for snorkelling (tuition provided if required) and guided walks through the forest trails and intertidal area (tides permitting) are both part of the package here. If you like the idea of a Robinson Crusoe, feet-in the sand experience, you’ll love Chumbe!
Take the return boat transfer back to Stone Town, where you’ll be transferred to the airport for a light aircraft flight to Mafia Island. Here you stay 3 nights at Ras Mbisi Lodge, with all meals, tea & coffee and drinking included. The use of kayaks and snorkelling equipment are also included. In addition to the lodge activities there are many other things to do including dhow sailing, scuba diving, whale shark excursions, fishing, turtle hatching trips, excursions to other islands and sandbank picnics. The entrance costs for the Marine National Park for some of these activities is payable locally.
Take a light aircraft flight back to Dar es Salaam and connect with your overnight flight to London via Nairobi.
