Ethiopia’s historic circuit is spectacular and most visitors to Ethiopia include a visit to these key attractions. Once part of a vast empire that has existing from 200 BC to 700 BC, Axum was at its centre, and today its collection of obelisks is quite remarkable. The Mariamtson Church in Axum is said to house the Ark of the Covenant, the original tablets brought down the mountain by Moses. The circuit includes a visit to Bahir Dar to see ancient monasteries and 14th century round churches with traditional grass roofs. Founded in the 17th century, Gondor was the capital and commercial centre and today visitors can visit the fascinating Imperial Compound. Built 800 years ago, Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches are perhaps the most awe-inspiring of all Ethiopia’s historic jewels.
