Cuzco is a treasure chest of colonial treasures. The Plaza de Armas main square is flanked by the imposing Cathedral. Its construction started in 1559 and took almost a century to complete and today is synonymous with the city's image. Inside, repositories of colonial art adorn the walls. The blocks for the Cathedral's construction were pilfered from the impressive fortress of Sacsaywaman. Overlooking the city, this site feels huge, although only a fifth of the original structure remains. The views to Cuzco downtown are spectacular on a clear day.
