Ghana's lively capital city, Accra is bound by the Atlantic Ocean to its south and Korle Lagoon to its west. Modern Accra ranks 11th in the list of the continent's largest metropolitan areas and all international flights arrive at the city's Kotoka International Airport. For visitors with a day or two to spare, there's plenty to see, such as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, which honours Ghana’s first president - who was instrumental in leading his country to independence. In the park, you'll find Nkrumah’s mausoleum and a museum charting the life of the great Pan Africanist. Bustling Makola Market is a vast, colourful bazaar where it's possible to shop for beautiful African fabrics. Additionally, the Jamestown Lighthouse offers panoramic views over the old town. Other sites of interest include the E.B. Dubois Centre for Pan African Culture, Independence Square and Black Star Square, which acknowledge the most famous symbols of Ghana. A guided sightseeing excursion usually includes opportunities for some craft shopping, taking in a Fantasy Coffin workshop, meeting with local artists and sampling delicious cuisine in Jamestown.
